Schorlarships

Our Target Groups
Our scholarship program at FLCF is designed to assist one of the most marginalized groups in our country: children who have lost one or both parents. Many of our beneficiaries come from households reliant on unstable, low-income sources, often stemming from work in the agricultural, fisheries, and construction sectors. When selecting recipients for our scholarship program, we prioritize educational achievement, focusing on underprivileged children who demonstrate high academic performance. Eligibility is determined by students’ grades in school exams, which are evaluated annually using school progress reports. Overall, our scholarship program is dedicated to promoting the educational development of these children, with the goal of empowering them to thrive independently in society. This initiative operates across six districts in Sri Lanka, with a significant concentration of beneficiaries residing in areas such as Ambalangoda, Balapitiya, Elpitiya, Hikkaduwa, Karandeniya, Kalutara, Panadura, Agalawatta, Bandaragama, Beruwala, Bulathsinhala, Dodangoda, Horana, Madurawala, Millaniya, Baduraliya, Matugama, Walallawita, Ingiriya, Tangalle, Beliatta, Okewala, Dikwella, Colombo, Kesbawa, Maharagama, Kilinochchi, and Dehiwala, spanning a total of 27 Divisional Secretariat areas.
How we do?
The scholarship program administered by FLCF is structured as a monthly payment scheme aimed at covering the educational expenses of our sponsorship beneficiaries. These beneficiaries’ families are classified into three groups based on their educational status and grade, namely:
- Scholarship Program: Designed for students who have passed the grade 5 scholarship exam, this program supports their education from grade 6 to O/L exam.
- Scholarship Program: Tailored for students those who have passed O/L exam and preparing for their Advanced Level exams, this program provides support and resources for two years leading up to their A/L Exam.
- Professional Sponsorship Program: Aimed at students who have passed their A/L exam and have been accepted into a university, this program offers financial and professional support for their higher education.
Note: The value of the scholarship or sponsorship can vary depending on the category above.
As per FLCF regulations, guardians enrolled in the scholarship and LKS programs are required to allocate approximately 20% of the donation to a designated bank savings account. This process is closely monitored by our team to ensure that the saved funds are utilized effectively for the future needs of the respective child. Our field officers serve as intermediaries between donors and children, assessing educational progress through regular home visits and providing updates to donors. E-cards and Christmas cards are sent to individual child sponsors as tokens of appreciation and to foster a stronger connection between sponsors and children.
Moreover, FLCF assumes a nurturing role akin to foster parents for each child under our care. We offer guidance on vocational training and employment opportunities when necessary, ensuring that children are equipped with the skills needed to become self-sufficient. Importantly, our counseling professionals provide emotional support during challenging times, guiding children towards their future goals. Ultimately, the sponsorship program aims to empower children to become self-reliant and independent individuals.
Selecting procedure of the sponsorship program
To qualify for sponsorship from FLCF, the applicant must be a full or half-orphaned child, having lost either one or both parents. Additionally, the child should demonstrate a high level of educational achievement and progress.
The application process entails the following steps:
- The child or guardian must submit a detailed request letter to FLCF management outlining the reasons for seeking sponsorship, including family details, financial situation, and the child’s educational background. This letter must be recommended by the Grama Niladari (GN) and the Divisional Secretary of the area.
- The child or guardian must submit a detailed request letter to FLCF management outlining the reasons for seeking sponsorship, including family details, financial situation, and the child’s educational background. This letter must be recommended by the Grama Niladari (GN) and the Divisional Secretary of the area.
- If the child is attending school, a letter from the school principal and class teacher confirming schooling, educational level, and participation in extracurricular activities is required.
- Priority will be given to sponsorship requests directly from the Divisional Secretary, Grama Niladari, or school principal.
- Once the documentation is complete, the FLCF team conducts a visit to the child’s living place to assess the situation and gather additional information to prepare the child’s Biodata.
- The child is then assigned marks or points based on family income and educational situation and placed on a priority list.
- Upon selection, the guardian signs an agreement with FLCF, committing to the proper use of sponsorship funds for the child’s education and basic needs. Additionally, the guardian agrees to adhere to FLCF’s photo policy and sponsorship program rules and regulations. This agreement is renewed every two years with updated conditions.
- The guardian is required to open a savings account for the child and deposit a considerable amount of the monthly sponsorship funds into the account.
The sponsorship program may be terminated if:
- The sponsorship funds are misused or if there is a breach of FLCF rules and regulations.
- The child discontinues schooling or education.
- The terms of the sponsorship agreement are violated.
- The agreement is not renewed after the two-year duration.
- The SP team is dissatisfied with the child’s educational progress and behavior.
- The child sponsor chooses to terminate the sponsorship due to their own financial circumstances.
- Termination of the sponsorship may occur for any of these reasons, ensuring accountability and alignment with program objectives.
