Emergency Relief

Our Project - Relief 1

Our mission at Friends Lanka Child Foundation is to disrupt the cycle of poverty by empowering children through education. In response to the unprecedented challenges posed by the Covid-19 pandemic and ensuing economic downturn, we launched the Emergency Relief Program.

Throughout the entirety of 2020, FLCF provided vital support to those in need, offering essential items to sustain them during these trying times. Our focus has been on single-parent families, who have been particularly hard-hit by the nationwide lockdowns, often struggling to make ends meet without a source of income.

Under this program, we have distributed dry food provisions, health and hygiene supplies, surgical masks, and educational essentials to children facing financial hardship. Our efforts have extended to several districts, including Colombo, Kalutara, Galle, Hambantota, Nuwara Eliya, Kandy, Mannar, Kilinochchi, and Puttalam. Through these initiatives, we strive to provide hope and support to vulnerable communities, ensuring their basic needs are met during these challenging times.

The Selection Process

The selection process for the Emergency Relief Program follows several key steps, with a focus on assisting individuals and families impacted by economic downturns, natural disasters, and poverty:

  1. Identification of low-income families: Families are selected based on their low-income status, particularly if requests are received from non-programmed communities. These requests may come through Divisional or District Secretariats, indicating areas in urgent need of assistance.

  2. Assessment of needs: Project teams conduct visits to the affected areas to assess the specific needs of the community. This step involves engaging with community members to gain insights into their immediate requirements, including food, hygiene supplies, medical assistance, and other essentials.

  3. Scaling distribution based on donor contributions: The distribution of relief aid is scaled according to the contributions received from donors. This ensures that resources are allocated efficiently and effectively, maximizing the impact of the relief efforts.
Through these steps, the Emergency Relief Program aims to provide timely assistance to communities facing various challenges, supporting them in overcoming adversity and rebuilding their lives.
